No longer a dreadmill

Hello lovelies! SmileI got back so late from a fun night out yesterday (hence this morning post!), and woke up embarrassingly late (*cough 10am cough*)… So my ‘morning’ 5 miler is now going to be an afternoon run instead! Smile with tongue out

Big question of the day: Do you love or hate the treadmill? I was definitely a it’s-not-called-a-treadmill-it’s-a-dreadmill person. Just the sight of it made me shudder.13094479_1

I must admit though, it has grown on me. Now there’s a sentence I’d never thought I’d say! I would still take outdoor running any day, but for speedwork especially this thing is SO useful, and is really helping with my speed!

Case in point: yesterday’s tempo run. I ran the warm-up and cool-down miles at a very slow pace, and my ‘fast’ mile at a 7.30 min/mile pace. I have high hopes that with the work of this marvellous machine (<—did I just write that?!), I’ll be able to get all my miles at this pace, or dare I say it, faster? Surprised smile

The reason I still kinda dislike the treadmill is that it is so boring! Thankfully today I had a treadmill that overlooked the badminton courts, so that was kinda interesting to watch…DSC05533

…but still quite dull! On outdoor runs, there is so much more! Peering into people’s gardens to admire their garden gnome collection, having imaginary races with other runners, window shopping as you run through the high street… So do you have any tips on how to beat treadmill boredom?

I finished up my run with 15 minutes on the elliptical. See this isn’t boring for me, because the elliptical machines face the TVs (Star Wars was on! Open-mouthed smile), and I can read on it if I want!

I was a red, sweaty, but happy mess when I finished my workout!DSC05537

And then, I headed off to a friend’s house for a girl’s night in! Though I love dressing up sometimes, the great thing about being in with good friends is you can just leave your hair as a mess, wear what you want and have no make-up onand they won’t even notice or care! Smile with tongue out I wore a baggy jumper and my stretchiest jeans to prepare for a great night! Check out how cool I look:

I'm actually NOT dancing the Can-Can, just proving how stretchy my jeans are! 😛

Refuelling included eating pizza, doughballs and vast amounts of cookie dough balls (that I made and brought- these really are amazeballs! Open-mouthed smile) whilst watching one of my all-time favourite movies:images

To be honest, any film that has songs that I can sing along to very loudly and out-of-tunely is a great movie in my book, but Moulin Rouge is just pure genius. I love it.

So favourite movies you guys? Treadmill opinions and boredom busters? And have you tried the blogworld famous cookie dough balls yet? If you haven’t, no kidding, you MUST! That is an absolute order! I made the Chic Life’s chocolate chip ones, but I may also be making Mama Pea’s cinnamon-sugar ones later this week…! Winking smile

Hopefully, tonight I’m going to make and post the Strength Training Post Part 2, so stay tuned!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend friends! Open-mouthed smile

  1. Hey! I haven’t made cookie dough balls yet but they are definately on my “to do” list. I too woke up super late and have to do an afternoon run instead! Oh well….I beat treadmill boredom by setting myself challenges, doing short bursts of high intensity work and also by varying the speed. I love to do workouts where you get gradually faster and crank up the speed at regular intervals. xx

  2. i have not tried the famous doughballs! they are on my to-make list for sure though! i also get VERY bored on the treadmill… i find that doing intervals of different speeds reallly helps.. im so focused on changing the pace that I forget I’m still running!

  3. The more I read from you the more I realize we could totally be related!! I used to DESPISE the treadmill but now that it’s icy and snowy outside I’m forced to use it if I want to keep running. I’ve actually surprised myself because I love it now 🙂 I’m glad you do too!

  4. I don’t love the treadmill… time seems to go so much more slowly! But I do play around with speeds and incline to make the time go faster.

  5. I have not tried the doughballs but I keep seeing them everywhere any they look yum! I must write it down!

  6. I’m not a treadmill fan at all ~ never have and most likely never will be. It’s mostly because I would never choose to use one, so there’s always a sense of it being foisted upon me by bad weather (which I hate) or injuries (which I hate even more). So I associate the treadmill with bad things and troubling times in relation to my running. Plus, I am so ADHD that there is literally nothing that can distract me. I use my iPod but the most I have ever managed before dying of boredom (and pain! I get this weird dead led thing if I stay on for too long ~ I think it’s a trapped nerve caused by lack of variation in the running surface and the natural camber you’d get outside on a road.) has been 8.5 miles and that was last year. I’d find it very tough to stick it out for that long again.

That said, I can see the value of them in terms of speed work. They’re good for gauging pace even if they don’t mimic outside running completely.

Running for me is associated with freedom and movement, something which being static in the gym (and with no fresh air!) just doesn’t replicate…plus I always feel really self-conscious in the gym where as I don’t outside.

  7. I normally hate the treadmill, but now that I want to start doing speedwork, that’s what it’s good for 🙂

  8. Moulin Rouge is absolutely amazing!! Loved every second! Great workout! I am a crazy and don’t mind the treadmill, but of course I would rather be outside! Love refueling with pizza;) you are way too cute!!

  9. I have a love hate relationship with the treadmill. I really can not stand running outdoors in cold weather as I’m hypersensitive to the cold and I think I have reynards in my hands, anyway, to keep me going I always run some kind of intervals, speed or incline changing it up as often as possible. Plus a really, really good play list helps me to survive! This morning I ran 6.8 miles in an hour on the treadmill (furthest ive ran in over a month or so) – I was just in the right frame of mind to keep going past my usual 30 minutes!

  10. the treadmill and I have a love-hate relationship!

Sometimes I really do love the convenience of the treadmill, and other times I hate the idea of being stuck on it. Overall, I’m a fan 🙂

  11. I actually really like the treadmill. It’s where I first started running before I found the courage to take it outdoors. I admit it can get boring at times, but for me it’s a lifesaver when it’s freezing outside because I don’t do well running in the cold! Lol!

  12. this astonishes everyone, but i LOVE the treadmill!

for real… it’s my one and only. I should marry it.

I am just so A.D.D. that I need what a treadmill gives me during a run: a TV or a magazine. I can go 5 or 6 miles tops outside without a running buddy, but on the treadmill, I can do 13 if I’ve got a good mag or a good show on.

it’s all about the distractions! 😉

  13. Thanks so much for checking out my dough ball recipe! So glad you liked them! 🙂 I’m not a fan of the treadmill, but I’m also not much of a runner. I prefer Zumba!! 🙂
