How to survive a sick day


It’s okay, you can all breathe a sigh of relief: I’m not actually sick. ‘Aunt flo’ visited. Well, she didn’t actually visit because I don’t have periods at the moment (see here for details) but I annoyingly still get PMS! Anyway, all morning I had stomach cramps and felt bleugh. But I still managed to have a great day! Here are my tips for surviving a sick day:

1. Stay in bed all morning, reading…DSC06364

2. Relax in your PJ’s. Life is so much more fun that way.DSC04823

3. Make a nice comforting breakfast.DSC06478

My first bowl of oat bran! Inspired after reading Heather’s post about it, as it contains more protein and fibre than normal oats, so I thought I’d give it a whirl! Made it in the usual whipped banana way:DSC06473

The texture is amazing! Like pudding! I topped it with cinnamon and mixed berries.DSC06477

I loved it! Still, I won’t be giving up my regular oats any time soon! Smile with tongue out

3. Watch some quality feel-good TV. Friends, Scrubs and Gilmore Girls were my programs of choice!friends


4. Bake! I made Super-Charge Me cookies, that I leaned about from Gabriela, and they are so yummy!!DSC06490

5. Try new things. For me, this meant experimenting with my coconut butter that I received yesterday! I basically raided Katie’s amazing recipe collection! I made her meltiesDSC06482


…which were delicious!! It’s official- I love coconut butter!! (If you don’t have any, you can make it yourself- see here).

I then made something else of Katie’s that she hasn’t posted about yet! I feel so privileged! Smile with tongue outDSC06504

It’s a variation on her Raw Chocolate Fudge Cake, and she’ll be posting this recipe soon. Trust me, it is literally the best thing ever! Open-mouthed smile

7. Work up a sweat! I felt slightly better in the afternoon, and anyway, exercise helps relieve PMS symptoms, so I hit the gym for a tempo treadmill run, with my faster mile in…


…and my warm-up/cool down miles in a 7.50-8.10 min/mile pace. Followed by some time on the elliptical reading more of Paula Radcliffe’s autobiography. Did I look like a geek? Yes.DSC06449

8. Consume foods in liquid/mush form. Because that is what you do when you’re ill. Lunch was ‘Cheezy’ Broccoli Soup with two WW tortillas for dipping.DSC06497

Vegan ‘Cheezy’ Broccoli Soup

(serves 2, or one hungry person)

  • A head of broccoli (approx 200g)
  • 1/2 cup ‘cheeze’ sauce (can use more or less as desired)
  • 250ml (~1 cup) vegetable broth/stock
  • Nutritional yeast flakes to top (optional)
  1. Microwave your broccoli in water for about 10 mins, depending on your microwave.
  2. Blend together the broccoli, ‘cheeze’ sauce and broth/stock.
  3. Serve, topped with more nooch if, like me, you are a little addicted.
  4. Enjoy!!

So breakfast and lunch were liquid/mush, as was part of my post-workout snack! A very green Green Monster!DSC06512

Made with: 2 big handfuls spinach, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 cup coconut milk, 1 tsp xanthan gum, 1 scoop protein powder and 1 sachet Vitamin C supplement (to help with iron absorption). Topped with Grape Nuts for some crunch!DSC06521

  3. Friends is definitely my number one feel-good TV program! Love it. When I feel like I’m getting sick, I drink green tea and lots of water – I’m convinced the antioxidant power of the tea helps 🙂

  5. Oh my gosh, is that a peter rabbit plate????? I loooooved peter rabbit when I was little, and we have all the dishes and even a tea set :).
    I think your “eat a lot of chocolate” idea is spot-on!

  6. Hope you feel better soon! That soup looks like a bright green monster, and I love those star shaped treats. I just saw Tangled – a Disney movie – and it was wonderful. Disney movies always make me feel warm & fuzzy inside.

  7. Hope you feel better soon Emma. I like bowls of mush when I’m sick too, but honestly, I eat them everyday…sometimes for every meal. Teeth are totally overrated, no? 😉

    So glad you enjoyed your oat bran. I love the texture too – so creamy and filling, and it’s really good with coconut butter! 🙂

  9. Omggggsh how strange! I don’t get periods either (not regularly, at least) but I was just thinking today about how weird it is that I still pms every month (Like RIGHT now! lol) I meant to look it up, thanks for reminding me! Oh and, chocolate is definitely a must-have!!

  13. Oh wow… Your a baking crazy girl!! I LOVE to bake also! I eat so much of the dough that I get sick by the time the actual cookie comes out!! 🙂
    I mostly just sit in a hot bath and cry when I get cramps… Hahah… I feel much better after!
    I know I’ve already said this but I need to take a day and bake all your yummy stuff!

  16. I honestly think you’ve hit everything I would do if feeling poorly, looks like a comforting day! I always go straight for the green monsters and green tea if I’m feeling off. I love oat bran – try just adding a bit to regular oats it makes them so creamy!

  17. I have days like that with my period. Staying in bed, watching tv and reading is *definitely* the best thing! That and chocolate fudge cake.. 🙂

  26. Soup is a huge comforter to me if I’m feeling poorly. TV wise, I usually get out my BBC period dramas and indulge myself in buttoned-up love affairs and corsets 🙂 Friends is also a very good option.
    Chocolate, obviously, is a must … it goes without saying.

    I was really glad to read this, and your other post and the link to Meghann’s, because I’m in exactly the same situation, haven’t had a period since last February, have had a scan and doctors’ appointments and can’t work it out! Fingers crossed you’re ok x
